Synopsis
'The Queen Who Was Actually a Fish' is a short fairytale-like animation film, about people pleasing behaviour in women. Determined to meet the expectations of her kingdom, a queen suppresses her true nature to belong. But how much of her own identity is she willing to sacrifice for their approval? Confident she’ll be able to charm her way into being liked, the queen smiles politely and nods at every request, until the story takes a turn for the worse. While being immersed in a world filled with glamorous ballrooms, very pink gowns and shimmering scenes, the price of people pleasing becomes tragically clear. Inspired by classical fairytales I have created an animation using a combination of 2D and watercolor artworks. By giving the traditional fairytale-storyline a twist, this film serves as a redemption of the typical ending of the ‘fallen woman’.
